Aim of the Game

The aim of the Spoons Game is to get four matching cards, and once you have got this, grab a spoon. Don’t be the last person left without a spoon or you are out of that round!

Group Size

To play Spoons you want a group with 5 to 10 members. While kids and adults both love this game, we only recommend you play with children age 10 or older.

Preparation and Materials

To play the Spoons Game, you need to have:

  • 1 pack of playing cards
  • Spoons (1 less than the number of players)

Setup the game by sitting all the kids in a circle and dealing four cards to each player face down. Keep the rest of the deck and place it next to one child in the circle. Then, line up all the spoons in the middle of the table.

How to Play the Spoons Game

Once you have set the game up, everyone can look at their cards.

The player next to the deck picks up a card from the top. They can choose to keep this card and pass one of the four cards they had been dealt to the next player, or they can pass this card on. The aim is to get four of a kind, so pass the cards strategically to try to get a winning hand.

Once they have passed the card face down to the player next to them, this player then decides whether to keep it or not.

Simultaneously, the first player picks up another card from the deck. The cards keep passing around the circle and the first player keeps picking up a card from the deck.

It is a continuous flow of cards and all players are passing rapidly in sync, trying to get four of a kind. The player to the other side of the dealer does not pass their discarded card to the dealer. Instead, they make a separate discard pile.

As soon as a player has for four of a kind they grab a spoon from the middle of the table. After the first spoon has been grabbed, all the other players then have to grab a spoon.

As there is one less spoon than players, one kid will be without. This person is out from the next round.

Take one spoon away, shuffle and deal the cards again, and play another round. One player will be eliminated each round and at the end there will be a Spoons champion!

Alternative Variations

If you cannot get your hands on spoons, one idea is to puff up your cheeks with air when you have four of a kind. As soon one player puffs their cheeks, the other players have to as soon as possible and the last person to do so is out.

This can be hilarious as the other group members have all their attention on their cards and continue to play oblivious to the fact someone has already won!

This adds another level of fun to the game, trying to be as sneaky as possible so your other group members don’t notice.

This is an intense group game great for getting spirits high!
